THE HANDLER
NAME: Anung un Rama
NICKNAME: Hellboy, Ape, Right Hand of Doom, Son of the Fallen One, Destroyer of Worlds, Beast of the Apocalypse
CLASSIFICATION: Demon
GENDER: Male
AGE & BIRTHDAY: 65, Dec 23
APPEARANCE: Well over six foot tall, HB is a hulking mass of muscle, chiseled to perfection by hours of lifting weights and battling the evil nasties that lurk in the night. His hair is jet black and fashioned into a samurai style top knot. His jaw is strong and his brow pronounced, giving him the appearance of always being deep in thought. But when he does smile or laugh, which is often, it contradicts the most striking aspects of his appearance.
His skin is a bright red, almost cartoonishly so, and if that doesn't get you, the filed down horns protruding from his forehead and his prehensile tail will. He keeps his sideburns long and thick, and a goatee sprouts from his chin. The other noticeable thing about HB is his right hand. It looks to be made of stone, the same red of his skin. It is carved in runes and has proven to be nigh invulnerable.
ATTIRE: Hellboy has never been one to care too much for the clothes on his back. He's never had to shop for himself, as the Army and then the Bureau has supplied him with all the clothes he needs. Black shirt and pants suit him, with heavy steel toed boots and a utility belt with holster for the Samaritan. What he does like, however, is the long leather trench coat they supplied him. Thick and heavy and custom fitted to suit his size, it is loaded with pockets for all those handy little trinkets that any occult hunter would be SOL without.
PLAY BY: Ron Perlman
THE CREATION
NAME: Red
POWER LIST: Super strength and invulnerability/accelerated healing
DETAILED POWER: Hellboy's super strength, while not necessarily the stuff of comic books, is quite impressive. He's been known to lift trees and cars and use them offensively when battling various supernatural forces. This also transfers into his athletic ability, allowing him to jump and climb to great heights and run for long distances. This strength is not unlimited, however, and, like anyone, Hellboy does tire. Not to mention he's sort of lazy.
His invulnerability is misleading, however. It seems as if he should be fireproof, bullet proof...damage proof is probably a better way to put it. However, he is just highly resilient. He heals faster than humans, which allows him to recover from damage dealt at a greater pace. This healing is theorized to be the cause for the slow rate of his aging. While, in reality, he is in his mid sixties, he seems to be closer to his mid thirties in terms of physical prowess. He still feels whatever is dealt to him, but, being a tough S.O.B. Hellboy doesn't complain. Much. His right hand, however, does seem to be everything proof. And you better believe Hellboy's put it through the ringer. One time...literally. Just to see what would happen.
THE POTENTIAL
ALIGNMENT/OCCUPATION: World's Greatest Paranormal Investigator/BPRD Field Agent
WEAPONS: The Samaritan, an oversize revolver with a retinue of specialized ammunition. When the nasties get bigger, so does Hellboy's weapons. The Big Baby, a modified grenade launcher that looks like it came straight out of a cartoon comes in handy against foes that are more closer the gigantic portion of the size chart. He also carries within the confines of his BPRD issued Leather trench coat and utility belt a number of holy relics, horse shoes, herbs, anything and everything that would come in handy against the uglies of the underworld.
PERSONALITY: On the outside, Hellboy acts just about how he looks. He's big, so he's loud and obnoxious, eager to throw his weight around or kick ass, ask questions later. His brash and arrogant, confident in his skills. Sixty years of knocking out the teeth of every baddie from the Occult handbook will do that to a person. His appearance is a bit...Satanic, and he uses that to his advantage, eager to scare someone who wants to point at him and stare. Prone to mood swings and grumpy behavior, he smokes cigars and drinks beer, too much of each by most accounts, makes a mess of nearly any room or situation that he's in for more than five minutes, and generally makes an ass out of himself on a regular basis. There really doesn't seem to be any reason to like him.
Except that, when you get to know him, you see the true Hellboy. He's a big teddy bear with a heart of gold. You'd never know it to look at him, devil horns and all, but the big galut loves cats (he's got at least a dozen of them at any given time) and "pamcakes". He's an avid TV watcher, eager to learn about the "normal world" and a generally fun guy to be around. If you can get past all of those rough edges.
SKILLS: "Dr. Broom" took Hellboy in all those years ago and almost immediately began teaching the young demon everything he knew. He's considered a foremost expert on all matter of the occult, be it defense against it or battling it. He is physically fit and, being the surviving member of countless fights, quite capable to kick some ass. He also takes names.
STRENGTHS: Hellboy is nearly always sure of himself, whether or not he's actually right, he rarely second guesses his own decisions. He's a man of action, why wait to think things through? His mind is full of useful knowledge in regards to his career and random pop culture, though how useful the latter is besides on Trivial Pursuit night is questionable. Also, the whole super strength and tough to kill thing would be considered one of his strengths.
WEAKNESSES: HB has a bit of a temper problem. It's problem in the sense that he can't seem to keep a hold of it. He's also lacking the filter that stops thoughts when they start up in the brain and makes sure that they're kosher before moving on to the mouth. While there's no doubt to his knowledge, both pertinent and less so, sometimes Hellboy can be a bit...thick. Common sensical concepts that should seem simple sometimes go straight over his head, and his people skills could definitely use some work. Also, he's a terrible shot with that gigantic gun of his. Lucky it shoots such big bullets. Also, Hellboy's got a sweet tooth, and he'll melt for you if you offer him a Baby Ruth. Gotta love that chocolate.
THE STORY
HISTORY: Hellboy's entrance into this world was not unlike that of any normal person. If that person was summoned by Nazi occultists led by Grigori Rasputin (yeah, that Rasputin!) in a thunderstorm in a ball of flame within a ruined Church on Tarmagant Island, off the coast of Scotland. That was December 23, 1944. He was found by Professor Trevor Bruttenholm and, despite his demonic appearance, was taken in by the man and raised like "Broom's" own son on an Air Force base in New Mexico. As a sort of joke, he was named, "Hellboy."
As he grew, and boy did he grow, Hellboy was given everything a boy could need or want. He watched Howdy Doody, ate "pamcakes" and developed a love for stray cats. His father read him stories from mythology and, though the young demon did not realize this at the time, this became the beginnings of not only his training to do battle with the occult, but it was the beginnings of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD).
Fully grown before he has reached ten years old, Hellboy became a field agent for the BPRD and, though it is kept top secret, he is granted honorary human status by the United Nations. With Broom at the reigns and his natural abilities, Hellboy soon gained renown among the Paranormal community as an up and coming investigator and Occult hunter and has remained at the top ever since.
All the while the BPRD grew, gaining agents of all specialties and profiles. But Hellboy was still the only one who was "like him". That would change, however, when a tank bearing a strange amphibious humanoid was brought to BPRD headquarters. And thus, Abe Sapien entered Hellboy's life and, though they seemed polar opposites, they became best friends. With Professor Broom's guidance and Hellboy's get-to-it-iveness, Abe became a great agent, and the two of them a team made in heaven.
Years later, after countess adventures, the duo became a trio when Liz Sherman came to the Bureau. A pretty young pyrokinetic, Hellboy couldn't help but think she was (pardon the pun) hot. He would have said that sparks flew, but for years she resisted his advances, having to deal with her own issues before taking on someone else's. After she left the Bureau, but then came back after Rasputin returned and tried to use her to get to Hellboy, the two of them finally got together.
While that episode of Hellboy's life certainly ended well, getting together with Liz and all, it didn't come without it's price. Rasputin, in his efforts to use Hellboy, or more specifically, his Right Hand of Doom, to unleash the Ogdru Jahad and bring about the end of the world, attacked the BPRD and killed Professor Broom. The BPRD lost not only a leader, but a father that day, Hellboy most of all.
Hellboy, unwilling to take such things lying down, counter attacked and, after battling Rasputin and the Behemoth that he becomes, emerges victorious. He even got the girl. He and Liz began dating and soon move in together and while it is tense at first, followed by a period of more tension, they seem to make things work...sorta. The Bureau moved on without Professor Broom, though it was not easy.
When Prince Nuada made his attack on the human world, Hellboy was left with a decision to make. Fight for the world he has always lived with, but apart from, or join with the Prince and the creatures who didn't think twice about his appearance. Ultimately, he chose to fight against the supernatural forces, though the decision was a tough one. Hellboy and the BPRD were able to defeat Nuada only by offering the Prince a truce. The decision to let the Prince go free still wears on Hellboy's mind, though these days, he has other things to worry about as Liz is expecting twins.
