HELLBOY
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
◊ FULL NAME: Hellboy to most, Anung un Rama to some
◊ CODENAME: Red
◊ GENDER: Male
◊ RACE: Half-demon
◊ AGE: 65 (at time of death)
◊ APPEARANCE: Hellboy stands at 6'4 and weighs in the neighborhood of 280-300 pounds. His massive stature and bulk aren't the first thing a person will notice about him, however. His skin is crimson and at the top of his forehead are two round goggle-like growths which are actually horns ground down in an attempt to fit in with a predominantly human population. His entire body ripples with muscles from his calves to his broad shoulders, large pectoral muscles, and large biceps. He has black hair cut about chin-length and pulled back into a ponytail. He has begun to lose his hair up top, but a small goatee on his chin seems to compensate for his balding dome.
Hellboy bears a thick brow and a large face, almost gorilla-like in structure. His right hand is vastly different from his left on account of being made out of stone. Circular runes are carved into it. HB's right shoulder also has a similar rune imprinted in his flesh. Small scars that he's accumulated over the years riddle his body, but nothing too distinctive. Last but not least, he has a red tail that can serve as another limb at convenient times.
◊ ATTIRE: Hellboy is a man of simple clothing that serves a purpose. When not on a mission, you can usually find him laying around in leather pants with a long-sleeved cotton shirt. He wears thick black combat boots no matter what the situation, and he always has his father's rosary entwined around his left hand. When on a mission, he sheds any t-shirt and simply throws on a tan and weathered duster with lots of pockets that keep charms, amulets, and whatever else he may need. He, of course, wears the BPRD regulation belt on missions.
◊ FACE CLAIM: Ron Perlman
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
◊ AFFILIATION: BPRD
◊ PROFESSION: World's Greatest Paranormal Investigator
◊ PERSONALITY: Hellboy is, in a lot of ways, a big kid. He's loud, he's rambunctious, and he will argue and complain when he doesn't like something. He is enamored with cats and TV, and food, lots of food. He doesn't like Germans, he doesn't like vegetables, and he doesn't like being told what to do. Sometimes he has a real problem with authority, as he exhibits freely when dealing with Manning.
On a deeper level, he absolutely loves Liz with every beat of his heart. She is one of the only people who knows his true and serious side. His brother Abe is his best friend, though you'll never hear him pouring out his heart like that (unless you get him really, really drunk. He practices Catholicism, mostly taking his faith from his late father Trevor Bruttenholm. Of course Hellboy can be serious when the situation calls for it. He still does retain sarcasm and abrasive humor in serious situations as a way to deal with the stress.
◊ ABILITIES: Hellboy has inhuman strength, both in lifting objects and in taking damage. The second floor of a subway station once collapsed on him, embedding glass into his back, and he carried on fighting afterward with little difficulty. He can lift up to one thousand pounds (if he strains himself) and uses impromptu weapons like payphones and trees without a second thought. His physical strength is by far his greatest asset Maybe it's the fact that he's a demon, or maybe he's just lucky, but Hellboy is immune to fire and electrical currents. He can be engulfed in flames or tough a live wire and suffer no damage at all. And last but not least, Hellboy heals at a much faster rate than humans. He can completely recover from wounds in a matter of minutes, or a day if it's really serious.
◊ SKILLS: Hellboy has learned magical languages and chants, the spells to bring the dead back to life if only for a short time. He's not really the greatest shot, but his Samaritan has really big bullets. He also has over sixty years worth of paranormal knowledge and experience with things that go bump in the night.
◊ WEAKNESSES: Hellboy's biggest weakness is his temper. Lord knows he tends to get angry, and when he's angry make poor decisions based on emotions instead of logic. The positive side is that he can also do a lot more damage when he's enraged. It's a two-edged sword. Next in line is Liz and his twins. He loves Liz more than just about anything in the world -- and his children are just as precious. He would do anything for them. Baby Ruths, Tecate, and cigars are the Achilles heel of Hellboy's palate. NOTHING is better after a long day than sipping and ice cold Tecate, smoking a cigar, and munching on a nutty and caramelly Baby Ruth.
◊ EQUIPMENT: Hellboy's custom handgun, the Samaritan, is his usual firearm of choice. He has specially designed bullets just for the Samaritan and, if that's not enough, there's always the coup de gras of Big Baby: one seriously large gun that packs a wallop.
◊ RESIDENCE: N/A
◊ FAMILY: Liz Sherman (Wife, deceased), Trevor Thomas Bruttenholm (Son), Magdalena Katherine Bruttenholm (Daughter), Trevor Bruttenholm (Father, deceased), Abraham Sapien (Brother)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
◊ HISTORY: Hellboy was brought into the world by Grigori Efimovitch Rasputin on December 23, 1944 on an island off the coast of Scotland. He was brought into the world to destroy it, but Rasputin's plans were foiled when he was pulled into the portal through which Hellboy had come. The little red demon-boy was found by Professor Trevor Bruttenholm and the American GI's. They gave him the name Hellboy, and Trevor adopted Hellboy as his son.
Hellboy grew differently from other children and also aged slower than the average human. Even so, Professor Bruttenholm was a good father and he and Hellboy loved each other. When Hellboy became of age, he became a paranormal investigator for the Bureau of Paranormal Investigation, which was created after his birth. He quickly became the World's Greatest Paranormal Investigator battling mythical creatures like Baba Yaga, werewolves, and creatures no one had ever heard of. He was joined by Abe Sapien and Liz Sherman over the years, developing strong friendships with both. With Liz, however, Hellboy felt something more. He was definitely attracted to her, but no matter how many hints he might try to drop or whatever he might do to see if she felt the same, Liz never reciprocated the feelings. The fact that she left the Bureau on and off didn't help matters.
In 2004 after meeting a new suit named John Myers and their first mission together was to a museum break-in. There, Hellboy encountered the beast known as Sammael. During the battle, eggs were implanted into his arm but he was able to elude Myers and so, after defeating the beast he went and visited Liz in the mental ward that she had taken refuge in. He asked her back, but she refused and said if he really cared about her, he wouldn't come back. At that moment, suits showed up from the BPRD, and Hellboy's wounds finally caught up with him. Liz returned to the interior of the ward and Hellboy was carted back to the Bureau.
Little did Hellboy know, but Rasputin caused Samael to be reborn twice, and the next day Hellboy and Abe were sent in with Hellboy's Clay, his handler who Myers was going to replace. They went into the subway with one goal: eradicate the Samaels and all the eggs they were leaving behind. In the end, Abe was wounded, two suits were dead, Clay was in critical condition, and the body of a man named Karl Ruprecht Kroenen was found and taken back to Bureau.
Meanwhile, Myers had gone to go see Liz. She had an episode the night before and ended up burning down the entire ward of the mental hospital. Myers persuaded her to go back to the Bureau, even if only for the weekend. Unfortunately, she arrived right after Hellboy had an outburst at Manning that resulted in broken glass and Manning demanding that Hellboy be locked up. Liz was not impressed.
With Liz's return and her cold demeanor towards Hellboy made him think maybe he should try and tell her how he felt. He set to writing his thoughts to paper, but didn't follow through when he learned that Myers was taking her out for coffee. Instead, he followed them, doing recon from the rooftops and even pelting Myers with a rock when he got fresh. The pursuit was ended, however, when BPRD vehicles showed up. Professor Bruttenholm had been murdered by Kroenen, who wasn't dead after all. This left the BPRD without a director and Hellboy without a father.
After the funeral, Hellboy was finally able to have a word with Liz about how he felt. He wasn't able to say everything he may have wanted, but he did ensure her that he'd always look this good, and never give up on her. With that, Kroenen and the source of the Sammael beasts were tracked down to a crypt in Russia and the BPRD hit the ground running with dozens of charges to fry the Sammaels.
Hellboy got directions to the crypt by reanimating the skeletal remains of a deceased Russian named Ivan, and with him the BPRD headed into the crypt. Hellboy and Manning were separated from Liz and Myers and also lost a suit and Ivan before all was said and done. They found Kroenen and after fighting off the man with some help from Manning, Hellboy tossed him into a pit with swords lined at the bottom and then added a giant cog on top of that. Liz radioed that she and Myers were in trouble, so Hellboy left Manning behind and broke through a brick floor to reach Liz and Myers in time. The Sammael beasts overwhelmed Hellboy, so Liz had Myers hit her so that her pyrokinesis would manifest. She burned all of the Sammael beasts and their eggs, and Hellboy knew nothing but darkness.
When Hellboy woke, he found himself in a magical lock that contained his stone hand. Myers was manacled nearby, and Liz was unconscious on an altar before an obelisk. Standing before Hellboy was none other than Rasputin and Ilsa, his lover. Rasputin ripped Professor Broom's rosary from Hellboy's hands and gave him his true name -- Anung un Rama. He gave Hellboy a choice: use his hand to open a portal that would allow the Ogdru Jahad, the seven gods of chaos, to be unleashed upon the Earth, or Liz died. "For her." Hellboy breathed. "I'll do it for her." Saying his true name, Hellboy's horns grew, the magical lock became undone, and Rasputin instructed Hellboy to put his stone hand into the obelisk as a key.
Hellboy unlocked one of the locks, and as he was about to do the second one, Myers knocked Ilsa to the ground and picked up Professor Broom's rosary. "Remember who you are!" Myers bade him. He threw the rosary to Hellboy, and when he caught it, it burned his skin. "You have a choice. Your father gave you that." With Myers' words, Hellboy reached up and broke off his horns, causing the work of unlocking the first key to come undone. When Rasputin demanded to know what Hellboy had done, the demon impaled the man with one of his horns.
"I chose."
With that, Hellboy picked up Liz and he and Myers turned to leave. With Rasputin's death, a tentacled creature of the Ogdru Jahad that lived inside of him was unleashed. With Hellboy carrying Liz, he and Myers took refuge in a corridor long enough for HB to tell Myers to watch over her and the suit to give the demon a belt of grenades that needed to be set off manually. Hellboy jumped back into the chamber with the obelisk for a battle between the Behemoth and himself. In the end, Hellboy was swallowed by the creature, but not before he was able to pull the pin that allowed maybe fifteen seconds for detonation. It exploded inside of the Behemoth, sending it's entrails everywhere and Hellboy as well, albeit in one piece. "Gonna be sore in the mornin'..."
When Hellboy return to Myers and Liz, the suit informed him that Liz had no pulse. His heart heavy, Hellboy tried one last thing. He took Liz into his arms and whispered, "Hey, you on the other side. Let her go. Because for her I'll cross over, and then you'll be sorry." Life returned to Liz, and she and Hellboy embraced in a kiss as blue flames surrounded them both.
After the Moscow incident, the love between Liz and Hellboy grew. She left one more time to learn how to better control her powers and, while she was gone, Hellboy had Myers transferred to Anarctica after he mentioned he liked the cold, and Hellboy caught him staring at Liz a few times too many. Shortly after Liz's return, she and Hellboy married and moved in together. He didn't really realize how hard it was for her to adjust to his sloppy ways until she blew him through the door during a rather heated argument. That was quickly ended when the alarm for a mission call interrupted them. Manning, new director of the BPRD, begged Hellboy to be discreet and bribed him with a couple of Cuban cigars.
There had been an incident at a museum where there were over seventy guests, but they had all disappeared, leaving behind a thick goop on the floor. Abe, fully recovered from the incident in the sewers, immediately diagnosed the cause as Tooth Faeries that ate every single bit of a human being. The Tooth Faeries were unleashed from a box with the royal seal of the Bethmoora clan, and when they attacked they proved to be too much for the suits and Abe, so once the fish man was secured in a vault, Liz used her powers to burn them all to Hell. Hellboy strategically placed himself in front of a window and was blown out of it, landing on a police cruiser. This dashed Manning's hopes that he would be discreet when it was caught by several news cameras, and Hellboy declared, "I guess we're out." After this, Liz seemed to be distant and pull away from Hellboy. It took him a while to notice.
With the BPRD and its top agents being exposed, Washington sent a new BPRD agent in the form of Johann Krauss, an ectoplasmic medium. Hellboy immediately didn't like him because he was German and seemed pretentious. Hellboy let this be known with sarcasm and witty remarks all the way to the Troll Market, through which Hellboy and Krauss tried to find who bought the Tooth Faeries. Liz asked if they could talk on the com, but Krauss wanted radio silence, so they were unable to do so. After some persuasion from Hellboy's left hand on a creature in the Troll Market, the demon was told that an elf named Prince Nuada bought them to start a war with the human world. Meanwhile, Abe had become acquainted with Nuada's twin sister Princess Nuala as she retrieved a map with the location of the Golden Army. Unfortunately, a troll named Wink had followed her and attacked Abe when he tried to help her escape. Hellboy showed up in time to keep Abe from being punched to a pulp and told him to get out of there. In the resulting battle, Hellboy's cuban cigar was smashed by Wink and Hellboy obliterated Wink's mechanical fist with his own. Wink still tried to fight, and instead his fist was pulled into a grinder and that took care of that.
Outside the Troll Market, Princess Nuala revealed that her brother needed a final crown piece she had and the map with the location of the Golden Army to use it against mankind. Hellboy defended the woman when she told Krauss she would not give up the crown piece or map to the Bureau unless she went with it, but they were interrupted by Prince Nuada. He unleashed an Elemental, a Forest God, upon New York and Hellboy had to grab his special gun, Big Baby, to deal with it. While trying to protect the citizens, Hellboy saved a baby that had been locked in a car and ended up carrying the child with him while battling it out with the Elemental. When the opportunity came, Krauss made Hellboy to shoot the Elemental in the head. Hellboy hesitated just as Nuada materialized on a nearby rooftop, asking why Hellboy hesitated and informing him that the Elemental was the last of its kind. Nuada tried to coax Hellboy, telling him that he had more similarities with the fantastic world than the world of man. "If you cannot command, then you must obey." With that, Hellboy pulled the trigger with mixed feelings, ending the Elemental's life and sending a cascade of blossoms over the city.
When Hellboy returned the baby to his mother, she demanded to know what he had done to her child. Even though the baby was fine, a cop drew his gun on Hellboy, declaring that his stone hand was a weapon in his hand. Liz jumped in front of Hellboy to defend him, declaring that all they had ever done was try to help the world. One man yelled, "You're a goddamn freak!" And pelted Hellboy with a rock, leaving a cut on his cheek. Liz, infuriated, became enveloped in flame. Hellboy placed an arm on her shoulder, and they returned to the Bureau. As Liz tended to the cut on her husband's cheek, she ensured he had done a good job.
"So why do I feel so lousy?" He replied.
Liz told him she might leave for a while, to think, and Hellboy wanted to know why she couldn't think at the Bureau. With that, Liz asked, "Does everyone have to like you, or am I enough?" Hellboy mulled over these thoughts as he cleaned himself up and broke open the first of many six packs of Tecate that night. He had a confrontation with Krauss, in which the ectoplasmic medium demonstrated how his temper made him predictable and weak, and as Hellboy continued to drink, he heard strange music floating from the library. Carrying a six pack of Tecate with him, Hellboy entered the library to find Abe listening to Vivaldi, holding a remote and hiding something behind his back. It turned out that Abe had fallen for Princess Nuala and was listening to "Can't Smile Without You" by Barry Manilow on repeat. Together, Abe and Hellboy popped open a Tecate and talked about life, women, and started to get slightly tipsy. They made their way back to Liz and Red's room and Hellboy mused about how something was wrong with Liz, and it wasn't just because Hellboy wasn't the tidiest guy. Abe confessed that he knew what was wrong with Liz, and was just about to tell him when Liz woke up and interrupted him. "He has to know!" Abe declared, before he was then interrupted by the emergency switch that had been pulled in the library.
A still inebriated Hellboy arrived after Abe, stumbling down the steps to see that Nuada had infiltrated the Bureau and figured out the location of the Golden Army with the cylinder that had contained the map. The elf and demon clashed, Hellboy with the Right Hand of Doom, and Nuada with his lance. It ended in Nuada landing a hit to Hellboy's chest and breaking off the lance's head. Before Hellboy blacked out, Nuada promised that if he didn't have the crown piece, Hellboy would die. Nuada left with Nuala, and Abe tried to remove the lance head from Hellboy's chest, but everytime he touched it, it simply moved closer to his heart. Liz made a rash decision after she learned that neither Manning nor Krauss would give up the crown piece, when found (for Nuala hid it) for Hellboy's life. Liz and Abe supported Hellboy to one of the Bureau's planes, but were stopped by Krauss. He had a change on heart when Liz said there was nothing human inside him anymore. So, with Krauss' help, Abe, Liz, and Hellboy headed for Anterim in Ireland, where the location of the Golden Army lay.
As they approached the Giant's Causeway, a troll that had lost his legs approached them and asked what they were looking for. When Liz told them they were looking for Bethmoora and Prince Nuada, the troll agreed to take them there if he could have the lance head in Hellboy's chest. Liz told him it couldn't be removed without killing him, but the troll asked if he knew someone who could -- Could he have the lance head then? Liz agreed, and the troll lead the four Bureau agents into the Earth and into Bethmoora. They approached an archway and the troll had Liz and Hellboy come -- no one else.
Hellboy was fading and fading fast, and as soon as they entered what turned out to be the Lair of the Angel of Death, he collapsed to the ground. He was fading in and out, only too happy to be lost in an envelope of warm darkness, but the Angel of Death granted Liz's request and removed the lance head, bidding that Liz give Hellboy a reason to live. What Hellboy heard next would do exactly that. "Listen to me, you big ape. You have to get up. You have to get up... Because you're going to be a father."
That brought Hellboy to his senses immediately. He was going to be a father, he was going to be what Professor Bruttenholm had been to him. He and Liz had created life. "I become... Father?" Hellboy asked? Liz nodded, and they embraced. It was as thought Nuada had never stricken Hellboy with his lance at all. The troll interrupted them, saying that if they wanted to find Nuada, they needed to leave now. Hellboy ripped off the bandages that had bound his chest and confirmed that he was ready.
The four Bureau agents left the troll at the bottom of the steps leading to the center of the chamber of the Golden Army. There they found Nuada and Nuala, and there Abe revealed that he had found the crown piece -- and he gave it to Nuada. When Hellboy asked what the Hell he was doing, Abe replied, "You would do the same for Liz."
Nuada connected the last piece to the crown, and with it whole, he took control of the Golden Army and stood unchallenged. The army awakened, and after Hellboy and Krauss did their best to fight them off, the ones who had been destroyed simply reassembled themselves. So, remembering the tale of the Golden Army in a bedtime story Professor Bruttenholm had told him as a child, Hellboy challenged Nuada's claim to command the Golden Army. As Anung un Rama, he had the required royal blood to fight, and fight he did. Unfortunately, it was not enough.
Nuada defeated Hellboy and threw him down. However, he allowed the man to live, if only to see the destruction of the world he had worked so hard to defend. Hellboy and the others returned to the Bureau to do what they could to prepare for what would come, beginning what would become the darkest time of Hellboy's life. He had failed: he failed Liz, failed their unborn children, failed his father, failed his brother, failed the entirety of humanity. Hellboy clung to shreds of hope that perhaps the Bureau could find something that could stop this unstoppable army. But hope as he might, it was all in vain.
First, northern New York fell, then the city of New York itself. Nuada and his army weren't even breaking a sweat as they made a beeline directly to Trenton after gutting one of the largest cities in the world. And all Hellboy could do was run. He entrusted Kate Corrigan with the task of evacuating Liz while he tried to hold off the Golden Army so that the others could get out. The terror that he felt as he watched the army approach the BPRD through the security cameras that slowly blinked off one by one was the most palpable and intense sensation he had ever felt besides his love for Liz. And then... they were there.
Chaos abounded. People were dying. Tom Manning had positioned himself at a choking point with nothing but a handgun and a box of bullets. "Get out of here!" He commanded Hellboy. "Get the others out of here, just go! I can stall them!" They both knew it was certain death and they both knew it was needed. Hellboy pulled out a cigar he had been saving, Cuban, for the birth of his children. He handed it to Manning and offered to light it. The tip glowed red, Manning took a puff, and in a rush of tobacco flavored breath, cried "Go!"
Hellboy made it out. Manning didn't. Neither did Kate Corrigan. The Bureau limped to their base in Colorado and did what they could to set up headquarters there as Nuada's army ravaged the east coast. Liz was fine, thanks to Kate, but Hellboy knew... he knew that she wouldn't be if he didn't do something. And he knew just what that was.
Saying goodbye to Liz and their unborn children was the most excruciating thing that Hellboy would ever do, but he did it. Never would he have thought he would willingly leave the woman he loved to fulfill a destiny he never wanted. He returned to Russia, inserted his hand into the lock, and with a simple twist, awakened the Ogdru Jahad. It was the only solution he could think of, the only thing that might stop Nuada. And if it could save the earth from him, why couldn't Hellboy save the world from them?
The Ogdru Jahad unleashed chaos in every form of the word and the mortal plane became a wasteland of strife and war and death. And Hellboy was responsible for it. Slowly but surely, Nuada's forces were pushed back, and then the day arrived in which the earth's fate would be decided. Nuada's army was smashed and the elven king retreated. The Ogdru Jahad had done what Hellboy hoped; now it was his turn to save what was left of the world. Barely knowing what he was doing, Hellboy put the last ounce of his strength into ripping the Ogdru Jahad apart and... he won. He had done it, he saved the earth, but at the cost of his own life. As his soul began to depart his body, Hellboy thought to his wife and their children. Were they safe? If they were, it would all be worth it. "I'll miss you, Liz," he muttered as he hit the ground, and with those last words, Hellboy died after saving the world from himself.
