I saw the film the weekend it came out - being a fan of the first - and came away enjoying HB2 far more than it's predecessor. Even though the plot was ultra-simple, I still found myself enjoying the experience.
Things I liked:
*Kraus! Even though they added an extra s to his name (for no reason?) and changed some things about him...okay a lot of things about him...he was still a great character to bring into the fold. I was hoping that Roger the Homunculus would get into the action - but alas, he's still in one of the display cases in the main hallway.
*Doug Jones actually getting to voice Abe! I know that David Hyde Pierce was brought in by Universal originally - and that he was totally awesome and mimicked Doug's voice for the first movie (along with refusing to take credit for the work he did) - but allowing Doug to actually be the voice of himself was pretty rad.
*The costumes and set design - all of it was well pulled off. HB2 clearly had a nice little budget, we can thank the success of Pan's Labyrinth for that.
*Drunk Hellboy and Abe - nuff said.
Things I didn't like:
*The movie dragged a bit, cutting into what could have been a fairly well paced story by giving us a bit too much of the cute but ultimately light romance of Nuala and Abe.
*Hellboy and Liz as a couple - okay, yes, his crush on her and their kiss in the first movie felt fine - but with them now married and with kids on the way? It was just too big of a distance from the comics for my liking.
*One particularly awkward moment in the fight scenes came up in the last fight with the Golden Army - what the hell are Liz and Abe doing? It flashed to them once briefly, standing and doing nothing - but they too were surrounded and under attack by the metal soldiers. At the very least I could've done with a scene of them hiding or running around. Even during the pan-out shot of Kraus(s) and HB fighting didn't have Abe and Liz in it >_>
Oh! And Abe totally does cry at the end. There's a single tear coming out of his left eye as Nuala turns to stone/ivory/wood/white-statue-thing. They made a deal about it a bit - what with Abe being all "I'm not sure I can even cry" and then the mild closeup at the end
