The Handler
Name: Alexandra Giselle Raylen
Nickname: Lex, Lexy
Classification: Human
Gender: Female
Age & Birthday: 24, December 3
Appearance: Lex stands a whopping 5 feet tall, with a very petite build and a smooth complexion that resembles an ivory color. Though Lex is quite petite, she is quite adamant about her daily physical fitness routines, giving her a well-toned, relatively muscular form, though she has managed to keep many of her womanly curves.
She has an oval shaped face, complete with a small, shapely nose and full lips. Her eyes are a very pale blue color, making the contrast between them and her wavy ebony hair, which she keeps at a hip length, quite striking. Lex keeps well-groomed eyebrows, plucked and shaped. As a general rule, Lex either lets her hair loose and free, or binds it in a lengthy braid.
Attire: Lex is known to wear a variety of bright colored clothing, varying in different shades, though she is quite fond of wearing white, when she is not applying her craft. Most of the clothing she wears, when she is not lurking about in the streets, consist of form fitting jeans or leather pants, plain cotton t-shirts or tank tops and high heels or high heeled boots. Lex works hard to keep the body that she has, and she isn't shy of showing it off in the least. Lex isn't a fan of carrying purses or unnecessary extra items along with her, so it is very rare that she is seen with one. She usually keeps her hair unbound when she is not applying her craft.
When Lex is applying her craft, she sticks to dark colors, mostly ranging from medium gray to black. The clothing is almost always cotton, silent, breathable, and easy to move around in. She usually wears a flat-footed boot, often in a soft leather material, always well worn and well broken in. Lex always binds her hair in a braid when she is applying her craft.
The Creation
Name: None
Power List: Shadow manipulation
Detailed Power: Lex's shadow manipulation is limited to her alone, as her shadow manipulation is the result of a chemical reaction in her body which causes her skin to refract light. Lex is able to control her skin's light refraction to various degrees, and is able to turn it on and off at her own will. She is able to refract the light from her body, thus allowing her to blend in with shadows perfectly. Beyond that, she does not have any physical abilities to enhance the shadows covering her, or cause others to blend into the shadows as well as she does. In the cover of night, so long as she avoids lighted areas, Lex can sweep through the darkness virtually unnoticed.
The Potential
Alignment/Occupation: Unaffiliated
Weapons: Two steel daggers, the blades approximately 8 inches long, as well as an additional dagger, which she keeps strapped to her thigh. All of her weapons are 'blacked out', using a flat black coating. She also carries a set of throwing knives with her, all of their blades blacked out in the same manner. All of the handles of the weapons are covered in a flexible leather material.
Personality: Lex is a fairly untrusting person, knowing that most people frown upon what she does for a living. She doesn't take glory in stealing or killing for a living, but rather justifies it, knowing that if she didn't do it, she would likely starve and die. She is overly curious, and this trait tends to get her into more trouble than it does any good. She is often a neutral party in any argument, choosing to take no side, until it is clear who the winner will be. She's very independent, and thus relies on instinct to keep her alive a great deal of the time.
Around other people, Lex is usually pretty quiet, preferring to observe before making decisions and laying verdicts about others. She tends to be a little insecure in regards to showing others her ability to manipulate shadow, knowing they would likely fear the thought of being watched or stalked by her. She has a very dry sense of humor, and isn't afraid to make witty jabs at other people when the mood takes her.
Skills: Lex taught herself, for the most part, the most effective way for her to throw a throwing dagger. She is fluent in French and English, though she rarely chooses to use the former, unless absolutely needed.
Strengths:
Lex has a knack for keeping a level head in confrontations, for the most part and she is a quick thinker, which tends to help a little when there's a bit of potential that she could be caught robbing someone blind. She's excellent at gathering information, being that she is a great listener, and does have the ability to meld into shadows quite effectively. Her night vision is rather good, thanks to hours spent in the cover of night, when applying her craft is far easier. She is relatively agile, keeping herself in shape with her consitent training and excercise.
Weaknesses:
Though she hates to admit it, Lex finds bright lights to be quite uncomfortable. After spending a great portion of her time in the cover of night, or just melded into shadows, she finds bright lights leave her inable to see in great detail. In confrontation and debate, Lex tends to annoy people with the extent that her patience can reach before she snaps, however, when she does finally let loose her fury, there's very little that will stop her, save riding through the storm and letting it live out it's course.
Though Lex is able to speak fluently in French, her words and meanings are often misinterpreted by others due to her horrid French accent. Either they misinterpret her, or don't understand her at all.
For understandable and obvious reasons, Lex is absolutely terrified of doctors and scientists. She still fears that there is a chance that they will try to drag her back to their facilities for further testing and experimenting. She will do whatever she can to avoid this fate, including murder.
The Story
History: Lex was born in Birmingham, England, and lived there until the age of six. Her early days were rather normal; her mother was an average housewife, while her father was a used car salesman. She grew up on the nursery rhymes and fairy tales of the average little girl, playing princess and dress up, and trying to force her father to have afternoon tea with herself and her imaginary Queen friend. At the age of five, that lifestyle of innocence and playful memories would cease for her.
Lex and her father had been out shopping for Christmas presents for their mother. Lex had been quite proud of herself for finding her mother a pretty locket that she knew she would love. A tractor trailer, holding a chemical substance, travelling the opposite direction on the road, lost it's traction in the snowy terrain, while traversing a corner, the trailer of the truck swinging around and t-boning the car containing the father and daughter. Upon impact, the liquid container was broken open, bathing both father and daughter in the substance. Lex's father was killed in the accident instantly, while Lex escaped with a few broken bones and a great number of small cuts and bruises.
Lex spent several months in the hospital after the accident, while her mother was left with hospital bills in which she had no way of paying. Eventually, Lex was sent to the USA, to live with her grandfather and grandmother who had moved to the country some ten years before Lex was even born. Her hospital care continued there, where her grandparents would visit her daily and pay her medical bills. While in the American hospital, a series of tests were conducted on Lex, attempting to determine the extent of the damage done by the chemical. Officials and doctors claimed the chemical substance that Lex had been exposed to had still been under testing at the time of the accident. The chemical was supposedly a light refractor, meant to line the insides of camera bodies, making the inside of the camera completely light tight. The chemical's effectiveness was apparently determined by how porous the material consuming it was. There was a great deal of fear in regards to what it might do to the small girl in such a concentrated and extreme dose, especially considering the amount of time she had been exposed to it.
Over the duration of her time in the hospital, Lex became increasingly afraid that she would never return home, and that she would constantly have scientists and doctors alike conducting tests on her, poking and prodding her, and downright making her life a miserable hell. She had spent her 6th birthday in the hospital, and just wanted to be away from it all.
Lex first discovered her ability to refract light from the surface of her body one night after having an argument with her grandparents about how long she would be staying in the hospital. The two had left the room to a sobbing Lex, completely distraught with the fact that she could potentially face living in the hospital for a while longer yet. Shortly after her grandparents left, Lex heard a doctor making his rounds down the hallway. Lex knew that further tests would be conducted, and she willed herself away. She wished more than anything that she could hide away. Getting up from her hospital bed, she made her way to a corner of the room, hugging her knees to her chest and attempting to make herself as small as possible. When the doctor entered the room, it appeared as if the little girl had gone missing. He had started hollering and yelling for security when Lex's concentration on wanting to disappear broke, and the little girl suddenly appeared in the shadows in the corner of the room. The doctor and nurses were stunned, and immediately a fresh round of tests and questions were issued to the six year old.
Eventually, Lex's grandparents stopped visiting, and Lex's stay in the hospital became a governmentally funded escapade. She seemed to live her life constantly hooked up to machines and devices that she couldn't even name. She spent the better part of ten years, living under the eyes of the doctors and scientists, until finally. She had tried outright walking out of the hospital on several occasions, always finding that she was taken back to her room and chided for being a foolish child. Lex finally decided that it was enough. The day after her 16th birthday, Lex stole out of the hospital in the cover of night. By this time, she knew enough of her unique ability to control it.
The doctors had explained it as such: She had been exposed to the chemical so long, while rescue workers attempted to free her from the mangled wreck, that the chemical had been soaked up through her pours and made its way to her Lymphatic system, quickly spreading through her body. Because the chemical had been absorbed directly into her system, the chemical reaction it had with her body, allowed the chemical to keep reproducing and recreating itself in her body. Lex was able to control the reproduction of the chemical through certain thoughts, the thoughts triggering in a part of her brain directly connected to the function of her Lymphatic system. The slight mutation in the function of her brain was baffling to doctors and scientists alike. Perhaps the atmosphere for the ideal conditions for a chemical to take root to such an extent in her body was already there when Lex was born, perhaps it was a mutation caused by the chemical.
Lex didn't stick around to find out. She left the hospital, using the ability to refract light, and sticking to the dark corners of the rooms. It shocked the 16 year old at how easy it had been to escape using the ability.
Lex had no money, no food, and had long since given in to anger at her Grandparents, who had stopped visiting her altogether. Lex was forced to live out on the streets, learning skills in daggers and throwing weapons along the way from various stragglers like her. Though her weapon skills aren’t, as well off as they could be, for a girl who didn't have any formal lessons, they were good enough to get the job done. Lex took any jobs she could to earn the money to survive, including assassinations when she was very desperate. Mostly she sticks to thievery and smuggling to get her job done.
